- De DirectShow-filters zijn verantwoordelijk voor het verwerken en afspelen van video- en audiobestanden onder Windows. Vanuit verschillende bronnen, zoals de lokale harde schijf, internet of een geplaatste dvd, worden de mediagegevens verzonden naar een filtersysteem dat de gegevens doorgeeft aan de juiste software, zoals videospelers.
- De verschillende filters produceren samen een zogenaamde filtergrafiek. Elk filter heeft een andere taak: men leest de mediagegevens, de volgende demuxes (splitsen het op in afzonderlijke delen, bijvoorbeeld audio- en videogegevens voor dvd-films), een ander decomprimeert de gegevens (decoder) en, last but not least, de zogenaamde renderer welke gegevens uitvoeren voor weergave of weergave.
